Biography of Imam Warsh

Imam Warsh ( Originally named Othman Ibn Saeed Al-Qubti , B. 728 AD, D. 812 AD) was an Egyptian who later on reverted to Islam. He travelled from Egypt all the way to Madinah in order to recite the Holy Quran to his teacher, Nafi. He himself mentioned that other students of Nafi would give up their turns of recitation to him due to his beautiful voice, and their consideration of him as a musafir (temporarily staying in Madinah). His teacher named him ‘Warshan’, a famous bird that was present in Madinah back then, and later on Othman changed his name into Warsh because of this. It is mentioned that Warsh recited over 100 khatmas (reciting the Quran fully) to his teacher Nafi.

He later on travelled back to Egypt, became the main Muqri’ (Quran teacher) there, and spread what is now known as the riwayah (recitation mode) of Warsh An Nafi.
